Overview

There is no better way to see The Netherlands than to follow its connection with the water. Water gave the country prosperity, it was drained by windmills and it is blocked by dikes to protect the (newly created) land. During this tour, you will see the symbols of The Netherlands, like the windmills and dikes. You will also visit no less than 3 Unesco World Heritage Sites, including the "Woudagemaal", the largest steam pumping station ever built.

Description

Stop At: De Rijp, De Rijp

De Rijp is considered as one of the most beautiful villages in The Netherlands. It almost looks the same as during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century). The beautiful townhall and old ship-lock are also from that era. The village prospered because of whale- and herring fishing. Before that, the area was water, but it was made into land by the windmills of Schermerhorn (our next destination). Our guide takes you on a pleasant scenic walk through this picturesque village.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Schermerhorn, Schermerhorn

The centuries-old windmills of Schermerhorn are among the most impressive of the country. One mill is now a museum, that you are going to explore (both the inside and outside). Learn how the mill was used as a wind-driven waterpump to turn water into land. To see the 3 windmills of Schermerhorn in the beautiful landscape is a sight you won't easily forget.

Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Den Oever, Den Oever

Our next destination is the village of "Den Oever", to see the famous “Afsluitdijk” (enclosing dike). This 32 kilometer long waterbarrier is one of the the best example of Dutch watermanagement. Here you'll also be able to see the “waddensea”, a Unesco Natural World Heritage site. It is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mudflats in the world.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Woudagemaal & Visitor Center, Gemaalweg 1a, Lemmer 8531PS

In Lemmer, we visit "The Wouda Pumping Station". It opened in 1920 and is the largest steam-pumping station ever built (and still in operation). It represents the high point of the contribution made by Netherlands engineers and architects in protecting their people and land against the natural forces of water. The pumping station is also a Unesco World Heritage site.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Rich Heritage, Thematerkade 4, Schokland 3455RX

Schokland is the 3rd Unesco World Heritage site that we visit today. It was a peninsula that by the 15th century had become an island. Occupied and then abandoned as the sea encroached, it had to be evacuated in 1859. But following the draining of the Zuider Zee, it has, since the 1940s, formed part of the land reclaimed from the sea. Schokland has vestiges of human habitation going back to prehistoric times. It symbolizes the heroic, age-old struggle of the people of the Netherlands against the encroachment of the waters.
