Overview

This tour covers the three major areas of the Black Hills and Badlands. You can put down the planning, and relax as we take you to the significant points of interest. At times, we may deviate from the itinerary for some surprise visits. We can spend more or less time at each location based on your interests.

Our guides are trained in a way that enhances your experience on so many levels. We care about your time here most of all and are willing to go out of our way to ensure you have an excellent experience. Photography is something we love as well, and photos will be provided at the end of each day, free of charge.

Description

Day 1: Private Tour of the Southern Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Custer and Crazy Horse

Stop At: The Black Hills, South Dakota United States
We'll pick you up directly from your hotel and take you to Mount Rushmore, Iron Mountain Road, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, and Crazy Horse Memorial.

Stop At: Iron Mountain Road, Custer State Park, Custer, South Dakota United States
One of the most sought-after roads for car and motorcycle enthusiasts, Iron Mountain Road is indeed incredible. Vistas are around every corner as we wind our way up, over, and around the mountain.

Stop At: Custer State Park, 13329 US Highway 16A, Custer, South Dakota 57730 United States
Iron Mountain Road leads into Custer State Park. We'll stop at the visitors center for an awesome movie and a break from the drive. After, we'll head down Wildlife Loop Road on our buffalo safari! Bison, Antelope, Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Prairie Dogs, and Beggin Burros are just some of the wildlife we'll see.

Stop At: Needles Eye, Custer, South Dakota United States
Traveling up Needles Highway leaves you in awe. As we get higher, the views get better. Three tunnels, numerous viewpoints, and of course the famous Needles Eye Tunnel are just a few things we'll see. Photos are a must on this out-of-this-world drive.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Sylvan Lake, Custer, South Dakota United States
The most beautiful lake in all the Hills, Sylvan Lake is a must-see. Filmed in National Treasure and looking like another planet, people come from all around to experience this attraction. Take a walk around the lake and breath in the mountain air.

Stop At: Crazy Horse Memorial, 12151 Avenue of the Chiefs, Crazy Horse, South Dakota 57730 United States
One of the most famous War Chiefs, Crazy Horse represents a true Native American Hero. Learn about Crazy Horse on the way and what made him so unique. Upon arrival enjoy a video on its maker and construction as well as the family behind the monument.

A great museum is part of this visit so take your time as you learn about the Lakota and their importance to the Black Hills.

Stop At: Needles Highway, Custer State Park, South Dakota United States
Needles Highway is a section of South Dakota's scenic State Route 87 that winds through the Black Hills area. It was originally created in 1922 by Governor Peter Norbeck, who sought to create a roadway that would allow visitors to see the "Cathedral Spires" of this otherwise inaccessible region. The drive winds through the rugged landscape, offering travelers stunning views of the Needles Eye Tunnel and other rock formations.

Day 2: Devils Tower, Spearfish Canyon and Deadwood

Stop At: Spearfish, Spearfish, South Dakota United States
We'll stop at the town and check out the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery before proceeding to our next stop.

Stop At: Deadwood, Deadwood, South Dakota United States
Welcome to the Wild West. Our stop here will include time to see a shootout reenactment, visits to some of the most historical places, and time for shopping.

Stop At: Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, Alt Route 14, Spearfish, South Dakota United States
Sit back and relax as we drive through one-thousand-foot cliffs that are millions of years old. Rolling Streams and waterfalls surround us. We'll stop all along the way for pictures and observations.

Devil's Tower is a striking geologic formation located in Wyoming, USA. Dating back millions of years, the rock tower stands an impressive 867 feet tall and is visible from miles away. The area surrounding Devil's Tower has a long history of spiritual significance for Native Americans and was declared the country’s first National Monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Locally, the landmark is called Mato Tipila or “Bear Lodge” and is connected with several Native American creation stories.

The scenic trails leading to the falls are gentle, offering visitors an enchanting walk through lush greenery and dramatic canyon walls. Day 3: Badlands National Park & Buffalo Gap National Grasslands

A legendary attraction, wall drug has something for everyone. It is a must-stop while in South Dakota. We may have lunch here, but if not you've got to try one of their famous donuts.

Stop At: Badlands National Park, South Dakota United States
One of the most unique places in South Dakota. Bizarre in fact. The Badlands was one of Frank Lloyd Wrights's favorite places, saying that it was nature's architecture. Within its borders are Bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, pronghorn, and an abundance of wildflowers. We'll visit both the Northern and Southern Units if time allows.

Stop At: Buffalo Gap National Grassland, Rapid City, South Dakota United States
Buffalo Gap National Grassland is a unique and beautiful landscape located in South Dakota. This designated grassland contains a variety of habitats, ranging from the native prairie, sandstone badlands, and ponderosa pine forests to wetlands, creeks, streams, and rivers. It is home to abundant wildlife, including mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, hawks, and songbirds. Buffalo Gap is also known for its spectacular views of the Black Hills, providing breathtaking panoramas to visitors.

Buffalo Gap National Grassland is also an essential ecological area with diverse plant species, including western wheatgrass, blue gama grasses, and buffalo grass, which can be found in abundance. The area is also known for its unique deposits of Fairburn Agates.

Stop At: Scenic Ghost Town, 17 Main St, Scenic, South Dakota 57780 United States
The ghost town of Scenic, South Dakota, is a place filled with fascinating history and stories. Located in the Badlands National Park, it began as a small community in the 1890s when settlers arrived from Europe. The town was founded by German immigrants who dreamed of creating an idealistic utopia; however, the harsh conditions soon took their toll. As time passed, more and more people left the town until the 1970s, almost entirely abandoning it.

Today, this once-thriving community is a silent reminder of the past, with several buildings still standing as a testament to its former inhabitants. The most prominent landmark is Scenic’s old schoolhouse, built in 1910.

The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is the perfect introduction to Badlands National Park!
