The elliptical theater known as the Colosseum is situated in the center of Rome, Italy, directly east of the Roman Forum. It is the largest standing amphitheater in the world as well as the largest ancient amphitheater ever built, despite its advanced ageIt was reported to have held between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators at various stages in its lifetime, with an average attendance of roughly 65,000. It was used for open-air performances of gladiatorial matches, animal hunts, executions, plays based on Roman mythology, gladiatorial contests, and quick mock naval battles. The building's use for entertainment ended in the early Middle Ages. It was later used as a factory, a fort, a quarry, a Christian shrine, and dwelling quarters for a monastic order.
