Welcome to Hartford

Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, was founded in 1633 as a trading post on the Connecticut River and is one of America’s oldest cities. For several decades after the Civil War, it was also a center of mid-19th-century industrial development and the country’s richest city. Hartford is still a center of the insurance industry and is called the Insurance Capital of the World. The city is home to the Wadsworth Atheneum, America’s oldest art museum. Other historical highlights include the homes of writers Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Hartford visitors can also enjoy beautiful urban greenspaces and parks, river cruises, a walkable downtown, many farmers markets, and a diverse food scene.
